Tatiana's dark eyes glinted under the full moon's silvery shine; she stood with her face to the canyon, examining how the land fell away into rocky ledges and shadows: how the grass stopped growing at her hooves. The land literally seemed split in two, as if a giant blade had cleaved down in the hand of the Maker, and broke the earth's surface.
Tatiana leaned down, staring deep into the shadows that crawled along the cliffside, and then filled the deep, seemingly endless canyon, making it like a black, windy river under the moon. She couldn't see into it, but got a strange sense that it was miles down: could that be possible? It was like the end of the world.
Something howled---not a wolf, a gale, it groaned and spun through the canyon, and Tatiana felt its cold hand on her pelt; she felt thrill run up her spine as she gazed with dizzy giddiness into the sightless canyon.
“Amazing,” she breathed, “it's amazing.”
