The three chicks that were due Friday hatched!
All of them are doing great, and I'll get some pictures to post soon...only one of them had a little trouble during the hatch. The little baby piped wrong, and had a bit of shrink-wrapping, but has recovered fine! My first guess is that they're two pullets, and one cockerel. We'll see if I'm wrong as they grow. :)
I did have three other eggs from our stock, but had to toss one yesterday---because for unknown reasons, the thing went bad. The remaining pair are in lock-down, due to hatch Wednesday and Thursday, if I'm correct.
I've candled the Marans eggs again, and though the remaining eggs appear to be fertile, some of them look a little weird---as if their air-sacs are misshapen, or something of the sort. The chicks inside are growing at unusual angles, I can't quite fathom the reason. Everything looked fine during shipping, but as they grow they continue to look different...maybe it's my imagination. I sure hope they hatch fine. The only probable reason for error at this time during the incubation would be dramatically fluctuating temperature. The temperature inside the 'bator appears to stay level, even throughout the night, however I know that the temperature in the house and outside sways a lot during the night---which has been cold for a long while now. The Marans will be going into lock-down shortly after the remaining two eggs from our stock hatch (or don't). We'll just have to see how things go! The breeder has already turned me down about replacing the non-fertile Marans eggs, because she doesn't trust that I am telling the truth. I've emailed her twice, but she is unwavering. I just hope the rest of the eggs hatch fine, and if they survive to adulthood, I may just have to get more eggs...from a different breeder.
Pictures of the new bantlings are coming soon!
